Greece’s Cheese Treasures: So Much More Than Feta! 🧀
Dear Cheese Lovers!
Greece has been a land of cheese for millennia, with each region boasting its own specialties—each more delicious than the last. Come with us for a journey into the creamy, melting, and sometimes tangy world of Greek cheeses!
A Millennia-Old Tradition of Flavour
Greek cheeses are anything but new! Since ancient times, they’ve held a central place in Greek cuisine and culture. According to mythology, it was Aristeos, the son of Apollo, who taught the Greeks the art of cheesemaking. 🌟 Today, these traditions live on, blending craftsmanship with ancestral know-how. Many Greek cheeses are still made from sheep’s or goat’s milk, giving them their distinct flavour.
The Stars of the Greek Cheese Platter: A Taste Discovery
Feta: The Timeless Queen 👑
Soft, salty, melt-in-your-mouth… Feta is the global superstar of Greek cheeses. Preserved in brine to keep its taste and texture, it’s perfect in salads, baked, or even enjoyed on its own with a drizzle of olive oil. 🫒
Did you know? Feta has been a PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) product since 2002. Only feta made in Greece with sheep’s milk (and sometimes a little goat’s milk) can bear the name.
Kefalotyri: The Cheese for Big Dishes 🍳
Salty and firm, perfect for grating over hot dishes or grilling as a meze (saganaki). Its texture is reminiscent of parmesan, but with a Mediterranean twist.
Graviera: Greece’s Sweet & Savoury 🌞
The second most popular cheese after feta, graviera is mild, slightly sweet, with nutty notes. Originally from Crete, it’s delicious both on its own or alongside hot dishes.
Manouri: Creamy Sweetness 🍰
Lesser known, this creamy and slightly sweet cheese is often used in desserts or added to salads for a gourmet touch.
Mizithra: Pure Greek Freshness 🌿
Fresh and light, mizithra is perfect with pasta or light dishes. When dried, it becomes denser and saltier.
A Cheese-Rich Cuisine: A Must-Try!
Greek cheeses aren’t just sidekicks—they elevate dishes and bring a whole new dimension to recipes. Imagine baked feta with cherry tomatoes, oregano, and a drizzle of honey… 😍 Or pasta sprinkled with grated mizithra and a splash of extra virgin olive oil.
